Questo è solo un piccolo estratto del libro scritto da Leonard Rowe “What Really Happened to Michael Jackson The King of Pop”, amico di vecchia data di Michael Jackson, che ci espone alcuni dei retroscena inquietanti relativi agli ultimi mesi di vita del cantante, ingannato da alcuni collaboratori e dalla stessa AEG Live, la società organizzatrice dei concerti di Londra dell’estate 2009, l’irrealizzati “This is it”.

Nonostante nel libro vengano menzionati molti nomi, spesso non scende in accuse compromettenti seppur palesi e note; questo naturalmente per evitare conseguenze, non solo legali. Ma da queste parole (di cui ne va risaltato il coraggio) si capisce e possiamo darci un’idea di qual’era la situazione intorno a Michael Jackson negli ultimi giorni della sua vita, dove si intreccia speculazione economica e ostracismo applicato dai settori più potenti dello spettacolo verso l’artista, prima fra tutti la sua stessa etichetta discografica, la Sony, che da inizi anni ’90 tentò in ogni modo di strappare la totalità del catalogo discografico ATV, di proprietà del cantante.

Capitolo 8: “Incontri con Michael”

“[…] Mentre ero a New York , al Madison Square Garden per il concerto di Prince, ho ricevuto una chiamata da Randy Jackson , il quale mi ha detto che suo fratello, Michael Jackson, voleva vedermi al più presto. Michael mi aveva chiesto di volare a Miami il giorno seguente e incontrarlo lì.

La mattina dopo, mi alzai di buon’ora, e presi un volo per Atlanta, e più tardi , nello stesso giorno, circa alle 4:00 ho preso un volo per Miami. […] Dopo esserci abbracciati e dopo averci detto quanto ci eravamo mancati a vicenda , si sedette e cominciò a parlare di ciò che ciascuno di noi aveva fatto nel corso degli ultimi anni. Mi ha parlato di come si sentiva, di come l’industria dell’intrattenimento lo aveva maltrattato.

Mi parlò profondamente di come si sentiva e di come Steven Spielberg e David Geffen lo avevano maltrattato. Posso dire che stava molto male per questo. Mi disse che doveva essere un partner della società DreamWorks, e che voleva così tanto fare un film . Steven Spilberg gli disse di trovare una buona sceneggiatura e che lo avrebbe messo nel ruolo di protagonista. Michael disse che è ciò che fece.

Mi disse che una volta trovato un buon copione lo mandò a Steven Spilberg, un paio di giorni dopo ricevette una chiamata da lui:
“Michael , ho delle notizie buone e delle notizie cattive. La buona notizia è che… il copione che mi hai inviato è grande. La brutta notizia è che non sarai il protagonista del film”.

Michael mi ha detto che è stato uno dei giorni più dolorosi della sua vita . Michael sapeva e sentiva di aver contro l’industria dell’intrattenimento.
Mi disse che non permetteva ai suoi figli Prince, Paris e Prince Michael (al tempo Blanket era piccolo) di guardare la televisione , perchè su di lui dicevano solo cose negative. Si riferivano a lui chiamandolo ‘Wako Jacko’ e ne parlavano come un molestatore di bambini.
Diceva che non importava ciò che di buono aveva fatto per il mondo, che non ne parlvano mai pubblicamente.

Sapeva che era detestato dai poteri dell’industria dell’intrattenimento.

[…]Dopo aver pianto e riso insieme, abbiamo cominciato a fare progetti per il tour mondiale.

Lui mi disse: “Rowe, dopo il processo… ovviamente voglio avere i miei problemi giuridici alle spalle. Voglio fare il giro dei 5 continenti”.

Io gli dissi: “Dobbiamo colpire prima l’America, così l’industria americana del’intrattenimento non avrà il tempo di prepararci delle trappole”.
Lui accettò.

Ricordo che a quel tempo Michael era in buona forma, l’ho trovato molto bene. Non è mai stato una persona molto grossa, ma era sano . Per tutto il tempo che sono stato lì, l’ho visto correre dietro ai bambini. E’ stata la prima volta in cui ho visto che grande genitore fosse…

[…] Ho parlato con lui quasi tutti i giorni , fino al giorno del processo. Dopo non gli ho più parlato perchè se ne è andato dal paese.
A mio avviso è tornato in America due anni dopo.

[…] Il primo gennaio 2009 sono stato avvicinato da un promotore del New Jersey che aveva un incredibile affare per Michael e i suoi fratelli.

In base all’accordo, Michael sarebbe stato pagato 15 milioni di dollari per una performance, i fratelli avrebbero preso 1 milione di dollari ciascuno. Sapendo come Michael era restio sul fatto di tornare a lavorare con i fratelli, chiesi al promoter di fare qualcosa di speciale che forse avrebbe persuaso Michel; dare a sua madre un milione di dollari. Il promotore fu d’accordo.

Poi ho provato a chiamare la madre. In quel periodo Michael abitava a Los Angeles e non avevo il suo nuovo numero, le chiesi se avrebbe potuto chiedere a Michael di chiamarmi, dato che avevo un affare incredibile per lui. Mi rispose che lo avrebbe fatto.

La sera dopo ero a casa, quando ricevetti una telefonata, circa alle 9.00. Quando ho risposto c’era qualcuno che rideva, ma sapevo che a ridere era Michael.
Ha detto: “Leonard Rowe.” Io: “Michael Jackson”.
Ho cominciato a parlargli di quest’offerta incredibile che mi era stata fatta . Dopo aver parlato per circa 20 minuti lui mi ha chiesto di prendere un’aereo e di andare a Los Angeles, voleva che incontrassi la persona che in quel momento gestiva i suoi affari. Quella persona era il dottor Thome Thome. Michael mi disse: “Lo chiamo immediatamente”.

Circa cinque minuti dopo il dottor Thome Thome mi ha chiamato e gli ho esposto l’offerta che avevo per Michael. Mi disse che Michael gli aveva detto che mi conosceva da tanto tempo, che mi voleva bene e che gli aveva chiesto di incontrarmi. Gli ho detto che sarei arrivato a Los Angeles il giorno dopo . Mi diede il suo numero di telefono e mi chiese di telefonargli al mio arrivo.
Sono arrivato verso mezzogiorno, ora di Los Angeles, e ho chiamato il dottor Thome Thome. Lui mi disse che era in riunione e che avrei dovuto chimarlo più tardi. Ho aspettato un paio di ore e poi l’ho richiamato di nuovo. Mi disse che era impegnato a telefono e che mi avrebbe richiamato. Non mi ha mai richiamato.

Il giorno dopo ho richiamato di nuovo ma non ho ricevuto alcuna risposta. Ho cominciato a pensare che mi stesse prendendo in giro.

Non riuscivo a capire perchè, perchè l’accordo che avevo preso con Michael era di alto livello. La maggior parte della gente del mondo dello spettacolo avrebbe ucciso per fare tutti quei soldi in un giorno solo. Sapevo che quell’uomo non aveva a cuore gli interessi di Michael.

Dato che non riuscivo a parlare con Thome Thome decisi di chiamarlo utilizzando un numero diverso. Ero arrabbiato per quella situazione. Quando l’ho chiamato col numero diverso ha risposto immediatamente. Gli dissi che credevo che lui stesse evitando le mie chiamate e che ero arrivato lì da Atlanta e che non apprezzavo il fatto che lui mi stesse prendendo in giro.
Gli dissi: “Michael mi ha chiesto di incontrarti, ed è quello che sto facenedo. Se ti rifiuti di parlare con me andrò a parlarne direttamente con Micahel”. Non risucivo a capire perchè fosse così sfuggente da un accordo così lucrativo per Michael , ma in seguito l’ho scoperto.

Dopo quella conversazione, mi chiese di incontrarlo nell’ufficio del suo avvocato, il giorno seguente. Mi assicurò che non stava evitando le mie chiamate e che era stato occupato, ma sapevo che stava mentendo.

Il giorno dopo, verso le 15:00, sono arrivato nell’ufficio del suo avvocato, mi accompagnò anche il promoter che mi aveva fatto l’offerta.

Quando siamo arrivati, c’era anche il dott. Thome Thome. Gli abbiamo parlato dell’offerta, ma lui ci disse che Michael aveva un affare da 300 milioni di dollari a cui doveva far fronte. Gli abbiamo chiesto di cosa si trattava, ma si rifiutò di parlarcene. Avevamo sentito dire che AEG stava cercando di concludere un accordo con Michael.

Così l’incontro è terminò e dell’offerta non se n’è fatto nulla. Il dottor Thome Thome disse che ci avrebbe ricontattati appena terminato l’altro affare più grande, tenendoci in sospeso per altre due settimane. Non abbiamo ricevuto alcuna informazione, ma siamo rimasti comunque a Los Angeles per tutto il tempo. Alla fine quella situazione mi irritò e decisi di chiamare Michael e gli dissi come mi aveva trattato Thome Thome.

Per qualche motivo anche Michael era arrabbiato con quel tizio.

Michael disse che avrebbe chiamato Thome Thome e che mi avrebbe richiamato a breve. Mi chiamò un paio di giorni dopo chiedendomi delle informazioni sull’affare che volevo proporgli. Gli dissi che il promotore avrebbe accettato di dare alla madre un milione di dollari prima di tutto. Mi chiese se le avrebbero dato 2 milioni di dollari, gli dissi che non lo sapevo, ma che ci avrei provato.

Andai dal promotore a chiedere se era possibile dare alla madre di Michael 2 milioni di dollari, in modo da poter chiudere l’affare e accettò.

Più tardi, quella stessa sera , ho ricevuto una chiamata da Michael, era il 21 Marzo 2009.

Quando ho parlato con lui sembrava che avesse in mente qualcosa, poi mi fece questa domanda: “Vuoi venire a lavorare con me? Ho bisogno di te per controllare cosa sta facendo AEG e per controllare le mie finanze”.
Poi aggiunse: “Rowe, ho tre figli , non posso tornare a casa da Londra senza soldi”.
Gli chiesi :“Qual è il tuo affare con AEG?” e lui disse: “Non so neanche qual’è il mio affare con AEG “. Dissi che sarei stato onorato di lavorare per lui.
Mi disse: “Io non so niente, Rowe, riguardo a ciò che sta succedendo. Ho accettato di fare solo 10 spettacoli a Londra, ma in seguito ho saputo che ne avevano venduti 50“.

Il primo compito che mi diede fu quello di mettermi in contatto con Randy Phillips della AEG […] per cercare di disporre gli spettacoli in modo che fossero più agevoli per lui .
Michael mi disse: “Non c’è modo che io possa fare gli spettacoli in base al calendario che hanno stilato”. […]
Il lunedì seguente ho ricevuto una chiamata dal fratello di Michael , verso le 9.00. Mi disse che aveva parlato con Randy Phillips e che mi avrebbe chiamato verso le 10.00 di quella mattina. Quella chiamata non è mai arrivata, così ho chiamato io Randy verso le 10.25, ma non era raggiungibile.

Poco tempo dopo ho riprovato, ma continuava a non essere raggiungibile. L’ho richiamato alle 12.31 e finalmente era raggiungibile. Al telefono era molto arrogante e ostile. Fu molto breve, disse: “Cosa posso fare per te ?”.
Gli dissi che Michael mi aveva chiesto di incontrarlo per cercare di riorganizzare il calendario degli spettacoli , in modo che fossero più agevoli. Randy Phillips disse che non aveva intenzione di far nulla dicendomi: “Abbiamo tutto sotto controllo , non ho bisogno di incontrarmi con te”. Gli feci notare che era stato Michael a chiedermelo, ma rispose che non mi avrebbe incontrato; a quel punto gli dissi :“Va bene , grazie”.

Randy Phillips insiste col dire che Michael aveva accettato di eseguire i 50 spettacoli , ma non ha mai mostrato un contratto firmato da Micahel che possa dimostrarlo, la ragione per cui non ha mai mostarto il contratto è molto semplice; quel contratto non ce l’ha.

Ogni organizzatore di concerti sa che non si può mettere uno show in calendario se non dopo aver firmato un contratto con l’artista coinvolto. Randy Phillips lo sa molto bene.

Il giorno successivo, o due giorni dopo, Frank DiLeo arrivò a Los Angeles. Ho fatto visita a Michael la mattina seguente, il 14 Aprile , nella sua casa di Beverly Hills. Mi chiese di andar da lui molto presto, verso le 7.00, perchè doveva partire per Las Vegas verso le 8.30 del mattino , quindi avremmo potuto parlare per circa un’ora e mezza prima che lui partisse . Suo padre Joe era a Los Angeles, presso la casa di famiglia ad Encino.
Quando gli ho fatto visita, quel pomeriggio, gli ho chiesto: “Quando è stata l’ultima volta che hai visto Michael?” e lui mi rispose :“Non vedo Michael da circa tre anni”.
Allora gli chiesi: “Quando è stata l’ultima volta che hai parlato con Michael?” e lui rispose: “Non parlo con lui da circa tre anni”.
Gli dissi che il mattino seguente saremmo andati insieme a casa di Michael.

[…]Quando arrivammo davanti alla porta Michael si avvicinò, era in pigiama e indossava gli occhiali da lettura. Scoppiò in un gran sorriso, io capii che era contento di vedere Joe. […] Poi ho cominciato a parlare con Michael di AEG, di Randy Phillips e degli spettacoli di Londra. Ho comnciato a spiegargli alcune cose che stavano facendo e che c’erano alcuni problemi, come ad esempio la vendita dei biglietti, poichè Michael sarebbe stato pagato in dollari americani anzicchè in sterline inglesi. Ho anche chiesto a Michael di cercare di separare le sue attività da AEG il più possibile. Sembrava aver capito tutto, e sembrava essere in pieno accordo con me.

Per Michael si stava avvicinando l’inizio della preparazione degli show, per la quale sarebbe andato a Las Vegas, mi chiese se avevo poratato la lettera che gli avevo chiesto di firmare. Quella lettera è stata indirizzata a Randy phillips della AEG, e afferma testualmente:

“Caro signor Phillips , vi informiamo che a partire dalla data della presente lettera (25 Marzo 2009) il signor Leonard Rowe è il mio rappresentante autorizzato in materia dei miei affari inerenti all’industria dell’intrattenimento. Tutte le cose che mi riguardano devono essere indirizzate a Mr.Rowe , il quale agisce in mia vece, fino a quando non revocherò questa autorizzazione. Prego di estendere ogni cortesia al signor Rowe”.

Dopo aver letto la lettera, Michael si accorse che avevo lasciato fuori qualcosa che lui mi aveva detto di includere; voleva che io controllassi le sue finanze. Scrisse quella lettera di suo pugno e la firmò, poi mi disse che ci saremmo rivisti al più presto. Abbracciò me e suo padre, dicendogli: ” Ti voglio tanto bene” e l’abbiamo lasciato.

Erano trascorse circa tre settimane da quel giorno. Il 15 Maggio 2009 ho ricevuto una chiamata da Joe, mentre ero a pranzo nel mio albergo a Valley (Studio City).
Mi disse: “Rowe , devi venire velocemente . Siamo in riunione al Beverly Hills Hotel”.
Io risposi: “Quale riunione?” e lui: “L’incontro che Michael voleva avessimo con Randy Phillips e AEG”.
Gli chiesi: “Quando?” e lui :“Ora , vieni qui”.

Ero confuso, perchè Michael in una settimana non mi aveva detto nulla, mi sono ricordato che mi aveva parlato di un incontro, ma non aveva detto quando.
Chiesi: “Dov’è Michael?” E Joe rispose: “E’qui, in albergo, e mi ha detto che devi venire qui ora”. Chiesi :“Chi c’è là?” Lui disse: “Michael, Katherine, Randy Phillips e un’altra persona da AEG”. Gli risposi:“Sono per strada , sarò lì in trenta minuti”.

Quando sono arrivato, Joe era davanti all’hotel, mi disse: “Seguimi”.
[…] Entrati nella stanza, c’erano Michael, sua madre Katherine, Randy Phillips e il suo socio in affari da AEG, Paul Gongaware.

[…]Quando sono entarto lo sguardo di Rendy Phillips disse tutto, senza dire una parola, capii dall’espressione del suo volto che vedermi lì lo urtava. Appena la riunione ebbe inizio le mie impressioni su Randy Phillips furono confermate; sapevo che voleva controllare tutto ciò che era legato a Michael e fece ciò con il libretto degli assegni AEG. […] Sapevo che andando lì si sarebbero affrontate alcune questioni delicate, così pensai che sarebbe stato meglio avvertire Michael di ciò che si stava per discutere, quindi chiesi a Michael di potergli parlare in privato rispondendomi di si. Siamo andati in un’altra stanza per parlare, gli dissi che avevo intenzioni di discutere per il bagarinaggio dei biglietti da parte di AEG a Londra e di altre cose immorali che stavano facendo, gli chiesi se avesse delle obiezioni, mi rispose: “No , vai pure avanti”.

[…] Cominciai a fare domande riguardo il bagarinaggio dei biglietti a Londra. Randy Phillips replicò: “Quelli non erano biglietti da bagarinaggio, ma erano le vendite secondarie”.

Io dissi : “Questo è solo un bel nome che hai inventato per questa cosa . Ho sempre saputo che si chiama bagarinaggio “.

Che ci crediate o no , fu d’accordo con me e disse: “Hai ragione”.
Questa procedura nella vendita dei biglietti, chiamata bagarinaggio, può essere molto redditizia per un organizatore di concerti. Quando un promotore si rende conto che la domanda dei biglietti è alta può tirar fuori un certo numero di biglietti prima che vadano in vendita. I biglietti che vengono tirati fuori sono in maggioranza quelli delle prime dieci file, questi biglietti vengono denominati come “biglietti premio” o “cerchia d’oro”. […] Ciò avviene senza che l’artista ne sia a conoscenza o partecipe ai profitti ricavati.

La domanda per i biglietti di Michael è stata talmente alta che è stato molto facile per Randy philips e AEG fare ciò. Abbiamo indagato e scoperto che avevano venduto alcuni biglietti di Michael per più di 500 dollari rispetto al valore nominale del biglietto; facendo qualche calcolo di moltiplicazione si ricava che da un solo show hanno ricavato un utile di 500.000 dollari.
Michael aveva chiuso sold out 50 show, quindi per AEG aumentarono milioni di profitti senza che Michael ne fosse a conoscenza.

Quando chiesi a Randy Phillips: “Quanti biglietti avete bagarinato a Londra?”
La sua risposta è stata: “Non lo so”. Poi chiesi: “Per quanto li hai venduti?” Rispondendo di nuovo: “Non lo so”.

Era evidente che non volesse rivelare queste informazioni a Michael o a me, poi gli chiesi: “In che valuta sarà pagato Michael?” rispose: “In moneta statunitense”.
Io dissi: “No, il denaro è stato raccolto in sterline inglesi, vorrei che fosse pagato con questa moneta”.

Ancora una volta il volto di Randy Phillips diventò rosso.

Il motivo per cui avevano deciso di pagare Michael in dollari americani , invece che in sterline inglesi , era che il valore della sterlina valeva circa il 50% in più del dollaro statunitense in quel momento. 1 milione in Sterline inglesi era pari a 1,4 milioni di dollari in valuta statunitense, pagando Michael in dollari americani AEG alzava i suoi profitti di 400 mila dollari per ogni spettacolo.

A quel punto Joe si irritò parecchio, al punto che Katherine dovette intervenire per farlo sedere, essendo stato un promotore per più di 30 anni gli è sembrato evidente che Randy Phillips e AEG stavano cercando di approffittare di Michael a Londra .

[…] Ero stato con Michael prima che si iniziasse a preparare per qualche tour. Era un perfezionista, si preoccupava di ogni minimo dettaglio, voleva che tutto fosse perfetto, ma per qualche ragione sta volta era diverso.

Era come se lui avesse già saputo che non avrebbe reso a Londra. Sembrava non preoccuparsi delle cose di cui normalmente si sarebbe preoccupato; non era difficile da notare se si conosce Michael. Era come se avesse avuto un’intuizione, una sorta di premonizione del fatto che non avrebbe tenuto quegli show a Londra.

[…] Avevo tanta paura per Michael, e per quello che doveva affrontare. Sapevo che senza di me in giro Randy Phillips non avrebbe avuto alcun ostacolo da superare. Sentivo che per Michael sarebbe stato un disastro . […]

CAPITOLO FINALE

Non ci posso ancora credere che Michael Jackson, il grande Re del Pop, ci abbia lasciati.
E ‘stato dichiarato morto alle 14:26 (PST) il 25 giugno 2009.
Finché avrò vita, non dimenticherò mai dove mi trovavo, o come mi sentivo quando ho sentito la notizia che un carissimo amico come lui, era sparito per sempre. A tutti voi, potrebbe essere stato il Re del Pop o una leggenda musicale, per me era qualcosa di molto più grande.
Per me, era mio amico, era una persona a cui devo moltissima gratitudine.
Gli eventi che portano alla sua morte prematura, ancora devono essere analizzati per bene. Non sto scrivendo questo nella speranza di cercare vendetta, voglio semplicemente dire la verità su quanto è realmente successo alla leggenda conosciuta in tutto il mondo come Michael Jackson, il Re del Pop. Sentivo il bisogno di riportare la verità e le mie emozioni, se non lo avrei fatto, sarei vissuto per sempre nel rammarico. E’ per lui e per il bene di tutti, che io sia qui oggi a riportare tutto questo.
Il giorno in cui Michael è morto, la mia vita è cambiata.
Stavo lavorando anch’io con Michael a Los Angeles. Forse, se non fossi partito via da Los Angeles, sarei riuscito a fare qualcosa per lui.
Michael stava preparando il suo tour di ritorno, ed io, ho fatto semplicemente ciò che mi diceva sempre di fare, guardare oltre i suoi affari, e AEG, la società di promozione dei concerti. Sono ancora molto perplesso su come la cattiveria della gente, abbia fatto questo grave danno al Mondo.

Ho ricevuto una chiamata da Randy Jackson (fratello minore di Michael) intorno 03:30 (EST). Appena ho risposto, Randy ha detto: 

“I paramedici hanno appena portato Michael all’UCLA Hospital. Vai in ospedale, chiamami una volta arrivato, e fammi sapere cosa sta succedendo”. 

A questo punto, iniziai a chiedermi cosa davvero stava accadendo. Il mio pensiero iniziale fu quello che era tutto uno scherzo. Sapevo che non voleva fare le date di Londra e non era neppure nella condizione fisica per farlo. Ho pensato quindi che fosse uno scherzo per uscirne pulito. Pochi minuti dopo, Randy mi chiamò di nuovo e mi informò che i media avevano annunciato che Michael era morto. Ho continuato a guidare, ma il mio cuore e la mia mente erano entrambi fuori senno. 

“Che cosa sta succedendo?”. 

Nella mia mente ho potuto vedere Michael, e non riuscivo ad andare oltre la sensazione che qualcosa di terribilmente stesse accadendo.
Come potrebbe essere morto Michael? Certo, non era nella migliore forma fisica, ma di pensavo riuscisse per lo meno a eseguire la prima data.
Una volta tornato a casa, Randy mi ha chiamato di nuovo e ha confermato che Michael era ufficialmente morto. Incredulità, dolore indicibile, in quel momento la mia vita si fermò di colpo.
Ho chiesto a Randy dove fosse sua madre Katherine, lui mi disse che era lì in ospedale con il resto della famiglia. Gli dissi allora che più tardi l’avrei chiamata per le condoglianze.
La chiamai, e potevo sentire quasi il tumulto nella sua voce.
Le ho chiesto: 

“Quando pensi che dovrei venire?”. 

Katherine mi rispose: 

“penso che dovresti venire adesso, sto malissimo”. 

Io, continuavo a pensare a tutte le cose che Michael e io avevamo discusso privatamente prima di quella data. Tutte le attività sospette che erano trapelate mesi e settimane prima della sua morte, era come se fossero davvero accadute.
Persone a cui Michael Jackson si era promesso di non avvicinarsi più, come John Branca e Frank Di Leo, erano improvvisamente riapparse nella sua vita da Randy Phillips della AEG.
Non potremmo mai capire il perché di questa cosa.

Michael e io, avevamo discusso in molte occasioni, e ora che posso mettere tutto insieme, posso vedere tutto in modo molto più chiaro.

A quel tempo, non siamo mai stati sicuri di John Branca, il suo ex procuratore, proprio perchè Michael, ebbe molti problemi con lui in passato.
Avevamo un’idea invece di Frank Di Leo, il suo ex manager. Abbiamo fortemente creduto che Frank Di Leo, fosse riapparso nella sua vita, perchè l’unico che lo conosceva meglio.
L’unica persona intorno a Michael, su cui la AEG e Randy Phillips non avevano nessun controllo finanziario, ero proprio io.
Sapevano che avrei voluto solo il meglio per Michael, per questo forse, hanno fatto di tutto per allontanarmi da lui. Forse si sono accorti che stavo andando contro i loro piani.

Queste attività sospette, mi hanno spinto a scrivere questo libro, per dire al Mondo ciò che viene nascosto dai media e dai poteri dello show business. Michael Jackson, il Re del Pop, a mio parere è stato assassinato, e le sue parole mi perseguitano ancora oggi: 

“Vogliono il mio catalogo (diritti di edizioni musicali), e mi uccideranno per questo.” 

Pochi lo sanno, ma Michael aveva il 50% del catalogo della Sony. 
Non ha mai voluto venderlo, voleva tenerla per i suoi figli.
I diritti di Michael Jackson e del suo nome, sarebbero valsi più da morto che da vivo. Con lui morto, la Sony avrebbe potuto muovere e gestire la cosa come meglio crede, senza che nessuno ostacolasse i loro piani. Credo proprio che sia quello che oggi stanno facendo. 

Hanno cercato di tenermi tranquillo, mi impedissero anche di fare interviste sul talk show.
Certo, parlare ora di Michael Jackson è molto pericoloso, ma io voglio farlo. Affronterò anche la morte se necessario.
Questa storia è una storia che deve essere raccontata. Il pubblico, così come milioni di fan meritano, hanno il diritto di sapere cosa è realmente accaduto al loro idolo.
Michael apparteneva sopratutto al Mondo, a loro.

A mio parere, la AEG aveva un contratto con Michael che è stato niente meno che una pistola armata per Michael. E’ naturale che lo stessero solo sfruttando. Questo libro è un resoconto fedele di ciò che è realmente accaduto a Michael Jackson, il grande Re del Pop, e uno sguardo più intimo dell’artista più famoso del Mondo.

” […] While in New York at Madison Square Garden for the Prince concert, I received a call from Randy Jackson and he said that his brother, Michael Jackson, wanted to see me as soon as possible. Michael had asked me to fly to Miami the following day and meet him there. 

The next morning, I rose bright and early, and caught a flight to Atlanta, and later that day, about 4:00 p.m. I caught a flight to Miami […] After hugging and telling each other how much we missed each other, we sat down and started to talk about what each of us had been doing over the past few years. He talked about how he felt the entertainment industry had mistreated him. 

He went into depth about how he felt that Steven Spielberg and David Geffen had mistreated him. I could tell he was very hurt about that. He told me he was supposed to be a partner in The DreamWorks Company, and that he wanted so badly to make a movie. Steven Spielberg told him to find a good script, and he would be cast in the starring role. Michael said that is what he did. He said when he found a great script he sent it over to Steven Spielberg, and a couple of days later, he received a call from him, “Michael, I have some good news, and I have some bad news. The good news is… the script you sent over was great. The bad news is that you will not be starring in the movie.” Michael said that was one of the most painful days of his life. Michael knew and felt that he was being “blackballed” by the entertainment industry. He told me he did not allow his children, Prince Michael and Paris (at this particular time Blanket was a baby), to watch television because everything that was being said about him was always negative. He said they always referred to him as “Wacko Jacko”, and they are always calling him a child molester. He also said no matter what good he did in the world, it was never talked about publicly. He knew that he was disliked by the powers of the entertainment industry […] 

[…] After we finished crying and laughing together, we began to make plans to tour the world. He said to me, “Rowe, after my upcoming trial… naturally, I want to get my legal problems behind me. I want us to tour five continents.” I told him, “We would hit America first, so this evil industry in America would not have time to set traps for us.” And he agreed. 

I remember at that time Michael was in pretty good shape. He looked very good to me. He had never been a big person, but he looked healthy. The whole time I was there, he kept running out of the roomto check on the kids. I saw then for the first time how great of a parent he was […] 

[…] I spoke to him almost on a daily basis up until the time he went to trial. After this trial, I did not speak to him again because he flew out of the country. When he returned to America it was two years later I believe, in 2006. 

[…] On January 1st, 2009, I was approached by a promoter from New Jersey with an incredible deal for Michael and his brothers. The deal would pay Michael alone $15 million for one performance. His brothers would receive a $1 million each for one performance. Knowing how defiant Michael was when it came to working with his brothers, I asked the promoter to do something special that maybe would persuade Michael to do this; which was to give his mother a million dollars also. The promoter agreed. I then placed a call to his mother. By this time Michael was living in Los Angeles and I did not have his new number. I asked her if she would please have Michael call me. I told her I had an incredible deal for him. She said she would do it. 

I was at home the following night when I received a phone call about 9:00 o’clock. When I answered, someone was laughing, but I knew that laugh; it was Michael. He said, “Leonard Rowe.” I said, “Michael Jackson.” I started telling him about this incredible offer that had been presented to me. After we talked for about twenty minutes, he asked me to get on a plane and fly to Los Angeles. He wanted me to meet with the person who was handling his business at the time. That person was Dr. Tohme Tohme. Michael said, “I will have him call you immediately.” About five minutes after we hung up, Dr. Tohme Tohme called me. I told him about the offer I had for Michael. He said that Michael told him that he had known me for a very long time, that he loved me, and told him to meet with me. I told him I would be arriving in Los Angeles the next day. He gave me his phone number and asked me to call once I arrived. 

I arrived around noon, L.A. time, and gave Dr. Tohme Tohme a call. He said he was in a meeting and asked me to call him back later. I waited a few hours and called him again. He then told me he was on the phone and would call me back. He never called. The following day I called him again and I received no answer. I was beggining to think this guy was ducking me, or giving me the run around. I could not understand why, because the deal I had for Michael was like no deal I had ever seen. Most entertainers would kill to make this type of money in one day. I knew that whoever this guy was he did not have Michael’s best interest at heart. 

After not hearing from Dr. Tohme Tohme, I decided to call him from a different number. By this time I was getting angry about this situation. When I called him from a different number he immediately picked up. I told him I believed he was ducking my calls. I explained to him that I had flown out from Atlanta and I did not appreciate him playing games with me. I said, “Michael asked me to come and see you, and that is what I’m doing. If you refuse to talk to me, I will go directly to Michael and tell him”. I did not now why he was ducking such a lucrative deal for Michael, but later I found out. He asked me after that bitter conversation to meet him at his lawyer’s office the following day. He assured me he was not ducking my calls, and that he had just been busy. But I knew he was lying. 

The following day at about 3 p.m., I arrived at his attorney’s office. The promoter who was making the offer also accompanied me. Dr. Tohme Tohme was there when we arrived. We presented the offer to him, but he told us that Michael had this huge deal worth about $300 million that he had to get done first. We asked him what deal, he refused to tell us. We had heard all along that AEG was trying to close a deal with Michael. So we left the meeting with the offer going nowhere. Dr. Tohme Tohme said he would get back in touch with us as soon as he found out about the other huge deal. 

He gave us the run-around for the next two weeks. We received no information, but we stayed in L.A. the entire time. I finally became annoyed with the situation and I decided to call Michael. I told him how I was being treated by Dr. Tohme Tohme. Michael had also become very annoyed with this guy for some reason. Michael said he would give Dr. Tohme Tohme a call and get back with me shortly. Michael called me a couple of days later and asked me about the deal. I told him the promoter had agreed to give his mother $1 million on top of everything else. He asked me if they would give her $2 million. I told him I did not know, but I would go and see if I could get it done. I went to the promoter and told him if he could give Michael’s mother $2 million I thought we could close the deal. The promoter agreed to do so. 

Later that night, I received a call from Michael. It was now March 21st, 2009. When I was talking to him I noticed that he sounded like there was something on his mind. He then asked me this question, “Will you come and work with me?” He said, “I need you to oversee what AEG is doing, and to watch over my finances”. He then said, “Rowe I have three children; I cannot come home from London with no money”. I asked him, “What is your deal with AEG?” He said, “I do not even know what my deal is”. I told him that I would be honored to do that. He said, “I don’t know anything Rowe about what is happening. I agreed to do only ten shows in London for AEG, but the next thing I knew they had sold out fifty.” 

The first duty that he gave me was to get in touch with Randy Phillips of AEG […] and go over the shows and try to arrange them in an order where they would be do-able for him. Michael said, “There is no way I can do the shows with the schedule they have in place.” […] The following Monday I received a call from Brother Michael at around 9:00 a.m. He told me that he had spoken to Randy Phillips and Randy would be calling me around 10:00 a.m. that morning. The call never came in, so I called Randy Phillips at 10:25 a.m., and was not able to reach him. A short time after I called again and still couldn’t reach him. At 12:31 p.m. I called and finally reached him. He came on the phone very arrogantly and hostile. I said, “How are you doing Randy? It’s been a long time.” He was very short with me. He said, “What can I do for you?” I told him that Michael had asked me to get with him, and try to rearrange the schedule where it would be more do-able for him. Randy Phillips said to me he wasn’t going to do anything. He said, “We have everything under control, and I don’t need to meet with you.” I told him that Michael asked me to do so. He said he was not meeting with me. I said, “Okay, thank you.” 

TO THIS DAY RANDY PHILLIPS OF AEG INSISTS THAT MICHAEL AGREED TO PERFORM FIFTY SHOWS, BUT HE HAS NEVER PRODUCED A CONTRACT SIGNED BY MICHAEL TO PROVE IT. THE REASON HE HAS NOT PRODUCED THE CONTRACT IS VERY SIMPLE, HE DOES NOT HAVE ONE. EVERY CONCERT PROMOTER KNOWS THAT YOU DO NOT PUT A SHOW ON SALE UNTIL YOU HAVE SIGNED A CONTRACT WITH THE ARTIST INVOLVED. RANDY PHILLIPS KNOWS THIS VERY WELL. THE FOLLOWING DAY OR TWO IS WHEN FRANK DILEO ARRIVED IN LOS ANGELES. 

I was scheduled to visit Michael the following morning on April 14th, at his home in Beverly Hills. He asked that I come very early, around 7 a.m. because he had to leave for Las Vegas about 8.30 a.m. and this would give us the opportunity to talk for about an hour before he had to leave. His father Joe was now in L.A., staying at the Encino family home. While I was visiting him that afternoon, I asked him, “When was the last time you saw Michael?” He replied, “I haven’t seen Michael in about three years.” I also asked him, “When was the last time you spoke to Michael?” He replied, “I haven’t spoken to him in about three years.” I said to Joe, “We are going over to Michael’s house together in the morning”. […] 

[…] When we arrived at the front door Michael approached us, dressed in his pajamas and wearing his reading glasses. He broke into a big smile, and I could tell he was glad to see Joe. […] I then began talking to Michael about AEG, Randy Phillips and the London shows. I started to explain to him about some of the things they were doing that I had a problem with, such as the scalping of the tickets and Michael receiving payment in U.S. currency instead of British pounds. I also asked Michael to try and separate his business as much as possible from AEG. He seemed to understand everything; he also seemed to be in full agreement. 

Time was slowly approaching for Michael to start preparing to leave for Las Vegas. He then asked if I brought the letter that I had told him I wanted him to sign. This letter was addresses to Randy Phillips of AEG, and stated verbatim: “Dear Mr. Phillips, Please be advised that effective from the date of this letter (March 25th, 2009) that Mr. Leonard Rowe is my authorized representative in matters concerning my endeavors in the Entertainment Industry. All such matters concerning me shall be directed to Mr. Rowe, who shall act in my stead, until and unless I revoke this authorization. Please extend every courtesy to Mr. Rowe”. After reading the letter Michael observed that I left off something that he told me to include. He wanted me to oversee all of his finances. He handwrote this on the letter and signed it. He then told me as we were leaving about a meeting that we were going to be having soon. He gave me and his father a hug and said, “I love you both.” And the we left. 

It was about three weeks later, approximately one month to the date. On May 15th, 2009, I received a call from Joe while I was having lunch at my hotel in the Valley, (Studio City). He said, “Rowe, you need to come quick. We are having a meeting at the Beverly Hills Hotel.” I replied, “What meeting?” He said, “The meeting Michael wanted us to have with Randy Phillips, of AEG.” I said, “When?” He said, “Now, get over here.” 

I was confused because I had not heard from Michael in about a week, and I remembered him saying we were going to have a meeting but he never mentioned when. I asked him, “Where is Michael?” He replied, “He is over here at the hotel, and he said for you to get over here now.” I asked “Who is there?” He said, “Michael, Katherine, Randy Phillips, and another guy from AEG.” I said to him, “I’m on my way; I’ll be there in thirty minutes”. […] 

[…] When I got to the front of the hotel, there stood Joe. He said, “You are holding everything up, follow me.” […] When we entered the room, there sat Michael, his mother, Katherine, Randy Phillips and his business associate from AEG, Paul Gongaware. […] The look on Randy Phillips’ face when I entered said it all. Without saying a word, I could tell from the expression on his face that he hated to see me there. As the meeting began, my thoughts of Randy Phillips were confirmed. I had always known that he wanted to control everyone associated with Michael. His way of doing this had been with the AEG checkbook. 

[…] I knew I was gioing to address some sensitive matters. So I thought it would be best that I make Michael aware of what I was going to be addressing. I then asked Michael if I could speak to him in private. He said, “Yes.” 

We went into another room to talk. I told him that I was going to discuss the scalping of the tickets in London by AEG, as well as other unethical things that I felt had been done by them. I asked him if he had any objections to that. He said, “No, go right ahead.” 

[…] I started asking about the scalping of the tickets in London. Randy Phillips replied, “Those were not scalped tickets, they were secondary sales.” I said to him, “That is just a pretty name that you have created to put on it. I have always known it to be called scalping.” Believe it or not, he agreed with me and said, “You’re right.” 

This ticket procedure called scalping can be very lucrative for a concert promoter. When a promoter finds that he has a show in high demand he can pull a number of tickets before they go on sale. The tickets that are taken most of the time are from the first ten rows. These tickets are often referred to as premium tickets, or gold circle. […] This of course is without the artist having any knowledge of or participation in the profit. Michael’s tickets were so much in demand that this was very easy for Randy Phillips and AEG to do. WE HAD INVESTIGATED AND FOUND OUT THAT THEY HAD SOLD SOME OF MICHAEL’S TICKETS FOR MUCH MORE THAN $500 OVER THE FACE VALUE OF THE TICKET. IF YOU WOULD DO THE MATH, AND MULTIPLY JUST $500,000, THE PROFIT FROM ONE SHOW, TIMES THE FIFTY (50) SHOWS THAT MICHAEL HAD SOLD OUT, YOU CAN SEE THAT AEG STOOD TO PROFIT MILLIONS, WITHOUT MICHAEL’S KNOWLEDGE. […] 

When I asked Randy Phillips, “How many tickets did you scalp in London?” 

His answer was, “I don’t know.” 

I then asked, “How much did you sell them for?” 

He also said, “I don’t know.” 

It was evident that he did not want to reveal this information to Michael or myself. I then asked Randy Phillips, “What currency is Michael going to be paid in?” 

He replied, “In U.S. currency.” 

I said, “No. The money is being collected in pounds. I would like for him to be paid in British pounds as well.” 

Once again, Randy Phillips’ face turned red. THE REASON THEY WOULD CHOOSE TO PAY MICHAEL IN U.S. CURRENCY, INSTEAD OF POUNDS, IS BECAUSE THE VALUE OF THE POUND WAS WORTH ALMOST 50% MORE THAN THE VALUE OF U.S. CURRENCY AT THE TIME. $1 MILLION IN BRITISH POUNDS WAS EQUIVALENT TO $1.4 MILLION IN U.S. CURRENCY. BY PAYING MICHAEL IN U.S. CURRENCY, AEG STOOD TO PROFIT $400,000 PER SHOW. […] 

As I continued talking about what I viewed as unethical business practices by AEG, Joe became highly upset to a point where Katherine had to intervene and have him sit down. Having been a promoter for the past thirty plus years, it seemed apparent that Randy Phillips and AEG were planning to take advantage of Michael in London. 

[…] I had been with Michael before when he was preparing to tour. He was very much a perfectionist. He would worry you to death about every detail; he wanted everything to be perfect. But for some reason he was different this time. It was as if he knew that he would not make it to London. He didn’t seem to care about any of the things that he would normally be concerned about. This was hard not to notice if you knew Michael. It was like he had an intuition or some kind of premonition that he was not going to perform in London. […] 

[…] I was so afraid for Michael and what he was facing. I knew that without me around Randy Phillips would have no obstacles to face. I felt this would truly cause a disaster for Michael. […]
